MMS is an acronym for Multimedia Messaging System a hotted version of SMS, because SMS is only for text. With MMS one can send and receive multimedia data (i.e. digital photos, videos, and so on).

You can send and receive the MMS to the Internet too using WAP, better with GPRS for a minimal speed.
