West Dunbartonshire is one of 32 unitary authority regions in Scotland. It borders onto Argyll and Bute, Stirling and City of Glasgow. It incorporates most of the old Dumbarton District Council and Clydebank District Council areas (indeed, it was initially called Dumbarton and Clydebank before being change to West Dunbartonshire).

The area can be distinguished by the three different areas that essentially make it up, the towns of Dumbarton and Clydebank and the Vale of Leven area.

The authority is administered from Dumbarton, although Clydebank is the biggest town in the area.
